RM Alert: Tropical Storm Ida
Tropical Storm Ida is currently in the Caribbean and expected to gain strength and become a hurricane this weekend. If it continues the predicted path, upper Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle could have impact.
As with any storm, the predicted path is subject to change, we urge you to monitor weather information as highlighted below.
Hurricane season began June 1st (May 15th in the Pacific Ocean) and will not officially end until November 30th. September is the most active month for hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean.
Pharmacists Mutual wants to remind everyone to be vigilant regarding predicted storms, his or her path and intensity. While your insurance policy may provide coverage for wind-related events, unless you have purchased flood coverage under a separate policy, you need to pay particular attention to efforts to protect your property.
Here is a checklist of ways to prepare:
- Listen to local media, weather radio, or the Weather Channel to keep updated on storm events
- Bring inside or secure outdoor items that can be picked up by the wind (outdoor furniture, bicycles, and flower pots)
- Close all windows, and board them up if possible
- Turn refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting (except for those protecting stock that must be maintained within strict range) in case you lose power
- Unplug all unused appliances
- Fill your car's gas tank
- Fill your bathtub in case your water supply is disrupted
- Obtain a supply of cash in case communication systems are disrupted
- Refill prescription medications if you do not have enough to last through potential power and supply disruptions
- Gather your important documents including insurance policies
- Contact family outside the affected area and let them know what your plans are
- Create an evacuation plan and be sure to listen to authorities regarding evacuations
- Refer to RedCross.org/Safe and Well or call 1-866-GETINFO for additional tips
- If you cannot move expensive and irreplaceable items out of the potential flood area, consider moving them to the highest level available that you believe can withstand the expected wind
- If you plan to leave the area for the storm, tell family or friends your plans, so they do not think you are missing
- Three-day supply of water, one gallon per person (don't forget extra for pets and infants)
- Three-day supply of food (non-perishable items, easy to prepare)
- Flashlight & extra batteries
- Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
- Rain gear
